Vocal Technique

You might ask, “What does vocal technique have to do with my style?” Well, I believe that the purpose of vocal technique is to give you the skill to sing what you want in the way you want, without hurting your voice. As long as your voice can work properly and freely you will have vocal consistency, control, and increased range. And yes, a wealth of different sounds such as rasp, belt and wails as well. You would also be able to sing in full voice throughout your range with no register break.

The converse is also true, that if you have poor or incomplete voice technique, your range and “vocal vocabulary” will be limited. In some styles of music a large range and versatility are not as crucial. However, most singers I’ve met or coached prefer singing without restrictions. Ideally you should be able to sing whatever you can imagine. Or at least have enough repertoire of sound to express your musical ideas and all while not trashing your voice.

Singing Style Choices

Personally, I would prefer to be able to sing any style and then choose the one or ones that suite my personality and individual tastes. I wouldn’t like being barred from a style I really liked because I didn’t have the vocal prowess to sing it. It is for this reason that I researched how the voice naturally works and developed a method to achieve a healthy, expressive, spontaneous voice in any style of music.

In the next blog post we’ll discuss the vocal qualities needed for some of the more popular genres of music. Then we’ll tie it all together with your personality and singing skill into a recipe for your uniquely identifiable vocal style.

Wishing you the best,
